Meet Madvesh, a 9-year-old boy from Vasana, Harihara, Davangere, Karnataka. He is unable to go to his village government school now because he is suffering from severe Kypho Scoliosis (an abnormal curve of the spine on two planes - side to side, and back to front).

Madvesh’s entire family is suffering from a genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis. Madavesh lost his mother when he was 6 months old and his single father has been taking care of him ever since. His father who works as a bill collector in Grama Panchayat is also suffering from severe hip pain which prevents him from working efficiently. As a result, his father’s earnings are too meagre to cover the treatment costs.

Over the last couple of months, Madvesh has started difficulty in breathing and faced short of breath even while walking for a short distance. Moreover, he also felt that both his feet are becoming weak. Through word of mouth, Madvesh’s father got in touch with Right To Live, an NGO based in Bangalore, and Mangala Hospital, Mangalore where he has been undergoing multiple check-ups. 

The total cost of surgery for severe Kypho Scoliosis is usually in the range of INR 8,00,000 to INR 10,00,000. Considering the financial condition of Madvesh’s family, the management of Mangala Hospital and the treating doctors have decided to waive off their charges and only the procedure, implant and medicine charges are to be borne. This is expected to cost approximately INR 5,00,000.

Only further medication can help him recover well. If he gets immediate treatment, he has a good chance of getting better. But his family's resources are dwindling, and they are finding it very difficult to continue with the treatment.
