Supported Idhayangal Charitable Trust

Today’s children are tomorrow's citizen.

Child health plays a vital role in the development of a country. But it is estimated that around one lakh children in India are suffering from Type 1 diabetes. And, these numbers are unfortunately increasing by 3-5 % per annum.

Type 1 diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in childhood caused by insulin deficiency following destruction of the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Children with  Type 1 diabetes need lifelong insulin injections four times a day along with finger pricking for glucoses as well. Without insulin, blood glucose levels continue to rise, and death will occur. Thus, Type 1 diabetes causes enormous strain on children and their families.

What is Idhayangal Charitable Trust (ICT) ?

“Idhayangal” (Hearts in Tamil) is a Charitable Trust formed by Dr Krishnan Swaminathan, MD, FRCP, and a leading Endocrinologist from Coimbatore. Idhayangal is a 12A & 80G approved trust for the benefit of underprivileged children suffering from insulin requiring Type 1 diabetes in India. Aim of ICT is to let no poor child with Type 1 diabetes suffer or die for want of funds or support to buy insulins, consumables, insulin pumps or education.

Some patients supported by Idhayangal

Raghavarthini, a 2-year-old, a fighter who battled with diabetic coma, is now doing well on four times a day insulin. Her father earns just Rs 6000/month.

Sathya Prakash, aged 26 years with a young wife and 3-year-old daughter, passed away recently with advanced renal failure and Type 1 diabetes. He ignored his diabetes in his earlier days due to poor finances. Holding our hand before passing away, his main wishes were for us to take care of his family and ensure that there were no more Sathyaprakashes in India who die with Type 1 diabetes for want of money to take care of their health! (ICT) is now supporting his daughter’s education as per his last wish.
