Shubhashree , aged 14 years from a village near Namakkal. She has Type 1 diabetes for the last 5 years. She has had around 10 admissions with diabetic coma for the past 2 years, very poor diabetes control in spite of taking 100 units per day of insulin, her HbA1c the three-month average is close to 15 % (500 mgs/dl for the past 3 months). At this rate, she would end up with end-stage kidney failure in 2-3 years. She comes from a poor farming family, dad earns around Rs 8000-10,000 per month. She dreams to be a doctor. An insulin pump would be life changing for this smart girl. She is on a trial insulin pump and doing extremely well with glucoses of around 150 mgs/dl.
Doctor’s recommendation (Dr Krishnan Swaminathan) Shubhashree is an ideal candidate for insulin pump therapy as her glucoses are uncontrolled in spite of four times a day insulin. She is showing excellent discipline for a girl from a very rural area on the trial pump. Insulin pump therapy is strongly recommended.Cost of one Medtronic 715 Insulin pump: Rs 65,000.
